About the Program
Developmental Trauma creates pervasive symptom clusters that frequently prove resistant to treatment and caregiving. Underlying these clusters is the child’s extreme difficulty in developing trusting relationships with caregivers, teachers, and therapists. These children come to rely solely on themselves and become reluctant to move away from this core survival strategy; this makes it difficult for them to count on significant adults in their lives, leading to “blocked-trust.”
Caring for such children - as a caregiver, teacher, or therapist - is a challenging process, which places the adult at risk for the experience of “blocked-care”. The adult, in on-going interactions with these children, is at risk to gradually begin to settle for just “doing their job”, and may lose their readiness for and ability to engage these children fully with their minds and hearts.
This presentation will attempt to provide an understanding of the dynamics of both blocked trust and blocked care, while describing a model of treatment and care that addresses these factors. Videos of treatment sessions, discussions, and handouts will accompany the formal presentation.
