Working with Dissociation and Parts in Couples and Family Work: A Collaborative Model

This workshop is to help clinicians develop a better understanding of dissociative parts in ourselves, in individual clients, couples and families, and with the network of providers who are often involved with these cases. Our growing understanding of the role of parts has helped us work more successfully with couples and families where one or more usually both of the adults are significantly dissociative. This understanding also has made possible more constructive conversations with other clinicians involved with these cases. A second goal is to enhance clinicians’ skills in working with parts in these different contexts.

Our work is explicitly relational and attending to aspects of the relationships involved is key to healing. We emphasize that everyone has parts and to work well with dissociation, clinicians need to be able to access and understand their own parts, which will likely vary in their degree of dissociation. Using lectures, role-plays, and an experiential exercise, we describe and illustrate this work.

Frances K. Grossman, PhD: Licensed psychologist, Supervisor and teacher at the Trauma Center at JRI. Adjunct faculty member at Lesley University. In Private Practice.

Anne Westcott, MSW, LICSW: Clinical social worker in private practice; consultant in attachment and regulation work, supervisor at the Trauma Center at JRI and part of the development team for SMART, a new body centered treatment for traumatized children. Anne is a trainer for the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute and has studied attacment therapy with Dan Hughes.

Meg Striepe, PhD: Licensed psychologist, Supervisor at the Trauma Center at JRI, Adjunct Professor University of Minnesota Medical School, Program in Human Sexuality. In Private Practice.
